Rather than trying to replicate what came before, the team at Drake Design saw the extension of the ‘California Dreamin’ as a harmonious and unimposing addition, while successfully contrasting the traditional Californian Bungalow façade of the front. Invisible from the street, upon entering the new addition, one feels immediately awash with natural northerly light and a wonderfully warm homely feel, even in the thick of Melbourne winter.

The custom window gable, perfectly frames the native gum in the rear yard and the glazed link successfully allows the leafy gardens to be celebrated from the internal spaces. From nearly every spot in the home, one can have a view of the external gardens while still feeling private and secluded from the bustling world just steps away from the front door.

The low maintenance external materials build a feeling of a calming oasis and create an effective amalgamation of the existing and new. By lightly touching the existing, the form and character of the existing dwelling is retained. The use of the glazed link to the new addition serves as a sense of ‘drama’ to the new areas where raked ceiling and raised floor to ceiling levels are truly celebrated.

The addition to the ‘California Dreamin’ is complete with plentiful glazing, modest and understated colours and materials palette, the living and outdoor spaces offers an abundant amount of space to not only entertain but to come home relax and unwind.
